Birth registration update: the challenges of birth registration in Lebanon for refuges from Syria

Norwegian Refugee Council

Highlights

This report presents an assessment of the Norwegian Refugee Council’s (NRC) pilot project on birth registration in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, conducted in early 2013. Following an outline for the legal framework, this update presents the findings of the assessment and documents the challenges faced by refugees in relation to birth registration in Lebanon.

The assessment documents that 92 per cent of refugees were unable to complete the possible legal and administrative steps to register the births of their children born in Lebanon, and offers recommendations to help parents obtain legal identity for their children.

This report has been published by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), with assistance from the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid department and the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

The cover shows a picture of a mother with her three boys, sitting on a couch. The title says "Birth registration update: the challenges of birth registration in Lebanon for refuges from Syria" in a black semi-transparent rectangle with NRC Logo on the left side.
